Berlin keeps cadastre in the cloud

Since August 2021, Berlin has been operating the AFIS-ALKIS-ATKIS process (AAA process) in T-Systems' Open Telekom Cloud (OTC). VertiGIS is the sole service provider implementing the hosting as a managed service for the Berlin Senate Department for Urban Development, Building and Housing.

Since the introduction of the AAA data model for the basic geodata for the four sub-processes AFIS, ALKIS and ATKIS and the basic geodata online (APK), Berlin has relied on the 3A software from VertiGIS, which has also taken over the specialist administrative support. SenStadtBauWohn was looking for an innovative solution to implement the requirement for barrier-free cadastral information - a requirement of the Berlin E-Government Act.

VertiGIS convinced SenStadtBauWohn with several test environments in the OTC to run the complete AAA operation there. Berlin obtains the complete service from VertiGIS. The managed service operation includes hosting the IT infrastructure and the entire software, including the databases and technical support. The high data protection and security requirements are fully met thanks to corresponding certificates from OTC, a separate VPN line from the OTC data center in Magdeburg to the Berlin state network and hosting in Germany. VertiGIS also implements the BSI requirements when operating the application.

Starting with ATKIS in May, operations in the cloud were launched for all sub-processes in the course of 2021. In August 2021, the last specialist procedure was launched in the cloud with the barrier-free cadastral information solution.

The all-round carefree package from VertiGIS has many advantages for the Senate Administration and the district surveying offices: It opens up opportunities for faster productive implementation of new software versions. At the same time, time-consuming coordination processes are no longer necessary. "We feel that our experience to date confirms that we have taken the right path for our administration. The expected increase in efficiency is already clearly noticeable after just a few months of VertiGIS's operational support," says Anette Blaser, the head of the department responsible.

Berlin is thus the first federal state to host the operation of the cadastral process in the cloud. Other cities and states have already expressed their interest.
