In the Smart City project, Stadtwerke Bonn is cooperating with the city of Bonn to set up and permanently operate a high-performance LoRaWAN radio network in Bonn. The pilot project serves to gather experience in LoRaWAN network construction and the available sensor technology and to identify new business areas.
In this context, a cooperation with the research group of Prof. Karl Jonas and Dr. Michael Rademacher at the Bonn-Rhein-Sieg University of Applied Sciences has emerged, which on the one hand scientifically accompanies the development of the project and on the other hand has found a strong partner in the economy with the Stadtwerke Bonn Group. This partnership forms the basis for participation in a funding project under the auspices of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research. As part of the "FH-Kooperativ" project call, Bonn-Rhein-Sieg University of Applied Sciences and Stadtwerke Bonn, together with other partners from industry, have submitted an application for funding under the heading "ZOHIS - Secure and Reliable Orchestration of the Heterogeneous Intelligent City". We are still eagerly awaiting feedback from the funding body.
In the meantime, tens of thousands of measurements have been taken as part of an initial field strength test, which are currently being evaluated by Bonn/Rhine-Sieg University of Applied Sciences. Initial findings already suggest that the selected locations and installed antennas will provide good coverage for the transmission area in and around Bonn. Preliminary results can be seen in the following figure.
