From now on, citizens of the city of Bonn have the opportunity to exchange their driving license online. All driving licenses issued before 19 January 2013 must be exchanged by 19 January 2033 for an EU driving license in credit card format with a time limit. The time limit only affects the document, not the driving license itself. The mandatory exchange will take place gradually. You can find the deadlines here

Irrespective of this, the driving license must be exchanged if you are applying for an international driving license, a passenger transport permit, a driver card, a driving instructor's license or if you hold a category 2 license and wish to drive vehicles in this category after the age of 50.

You can now apply for this service online in the service portal if you have a new ID card with eID function. The new online service can be found in the city's service portal at https://service.bonn.de/ in the "Traffic. Security. Registration.", the "Services A-Z" tab or simply by using the search function.

The fees are paid online using ePayment (PayPal, GiroPay or direct debit). The exchanged driver's license will be sent to you by post.
